Getting back online: How we’ll do it

I spoke with Verizon on Friday to find out what my options were to get a broadband connection at my home that will permit web hosting. It seems I can convert my residential FIOS line to a business-grade line with no restrictions without any changes in hardware or the need for a technician to come to my house (so they say at least!).

The good? It’ll be easy to get the new line up and running — within a week. It’ll also be a lot cheaper than colocation — $99 a month, which when you eliminate the existing cost of my $29/month home FIOS line (since the new line will replace it) that means the effective cost is $70/mo., a great deal. Finally, the server will be in my house, giving me “unlimited” access to it without having to pay $125/hr to do so.

The bad? No guaranteed service level, which means throughput may not be 2MB and there is no guarantee for uptime. Also, I still need to find time to go to Manhattan to remove the server from its current place of residence and figure out where to put it in my house. Finally, I’ll expect a small increase in my electric bill (as well as some extra noise coming from my storage room in the basement — the fans on the server sound like a jet engine before take-off).

I plan on calling Verizon on Monday to order this, and will try to make arrangements to get the server back in my possession some time next week. The good thing is that we’re making progress.

I’ll give you an update on other facets of the game and our other discussions over the past few days tomorrow.

    this is great news…

one question, not trying to be negative. You say no guarantee on the throughput…what does that mean exactly? I just have NO idea what:

“No guaranteed service level, which means throughput may not be 2MB and there is no guarantee for uptime. ”

yeah, what that is. Can anyone thats computer literate translate for a poor, helpless accountant? =)

Man that one guy is going to be bent when he finds out you are going to turn down his LOW LOW LOW OFFER that he worked so hard on.

At least I was trying to help Brian out…

  21. D Man Says:

So theres no need for a sponsor now? I have been taking baby steps toward that also and was probably almost ready to surprise the CSFBL Admin with a committed sponsor…been working on that one all day too.

  22. DeltaKoz Says:

    sponsors are still accepted. =)

  23. ComputerSims Staff Says:

    To answer some questions above…

jdbug100 : “is there a chance that csfbl wont have to become a money site?”

Answer: CSFBL will always be free to play. However we may offer certain features or services only to those who choose to pay for them.

KMils: “So basically your costs are now $840 a year? Is that cheaper than hosting it?”

Answer: $840 a year (plus taxes and fees) is for the Internet connection. This doesn’t include the cost for the server (leased at $170/mo.), hardware replacements, electricity, and — most of all — time to keep everything going. If you consider the expected cost of the Internet connection and the server itself, it’ll be between $250 and $275 a month, or about $3,000 to $3,300 a year.

DeltaKoz: “one question, not trying to be negative. You say no guarantee on the throughput…what does that mean exactly? I just have NO idea…”

Answer: In short, guaranteed throughput means they guarantee at least a certain level of performance. Non-guaranteed means you can theoretically get up to a certain level of performance, but don’t expect it. It’s like hiring one guy who guarantees being able to do five tax returns a day, and another guy who guarantees up to five tax returns a day. I’m hoping the guy I hired (guaranteed up to 2MB bandwidth) gives me about 1MB of bandwidth (which shouldn’t be very noticeable to most users).

D Man: “So theres no need for a sponsor now?”

If someone wants to advertise/sponsor CSFBL, that would always be accepted. CSFBL was always open to such options and we will continue to be in the future.

  24. Brian Says:

    Test comment. Please disregard. :)

  25. D Man Says:

If someone wants to advertise/sponsor CSFBL, that would always be accepted. CSFBL was always open to such options and we will continue to be in the future.

Let me continue to work on it then………made some progress today. Gotta see how much they are willing to sponsor annually.

Oh, I thought he had invented sliced bread and was selling it at a discount the way he was bragging!!

Hey bro, I have an idea, since you bailed on me 2 days after loaning you $3,000 and since you have what looks to be a successful website, I give you permission to donate that unpaid loan to CSFBL…

By the way, mom misses you..even if you did turn queer.

  27. darthclay2000 Says:

Now that things are looking up, hopefully all of the whining about paying will end and we as a community will step up and get the donations rolling. I am one of those cheapos who had several teams and did not donate as of yet. Being new I thought the site was covered through ads, knowing better now, I am ready to start donationg. Maybe that should be placed on with original registration that although game is free, donationsa needed to keep it that way. Brian, great game cant wait to see new version.

  28. rockman52 Says:

nice work on the sponsor Don, hope you can close the deal on that-need help with ideas convincing shoot me an email, i always seem to cover the opposite side you do ;) lol. hopefully with reduced costs and a potential sponsor (s) (hopefully more to follow), the game can stay as is and free for everything. I would like to stick around and keep playing.

Could you possibly be watching that on TBS as I am?

  31. DeltaKoz Says:

    perhaps…

  32. KMils Says:

Terrible movie. Just terrible. When Cuba Gooding is the best part about your movie… your movie sucks.

And yeah, I figured that there would be other costs besides the internet. Too bad you don’t own the server, that would save a ton of money. The new server drive… would that be a server purchase or a server rental or what?

  33. Spoop Says:

Buy the server. Let’s think long term, people.

  34. TwoPint Says:

“When Cuba Gooding is the best part about your movie… your movie sucks.”

I agree…Pearl Harbor sucks (and I miss you)…but what does that have to do with Jerry Maguire, which was one of the best movies in its genre during the 90’s?

  35. Arrius Says:

    I have question.

Will the new CSFBL still have the old teams in it? I finally had a good team with some good players and I’d like to know if I’m still gonna have the same team.

And thanks Brian for the update.

  36. Bill Says:

Arrius… im not sure i understand your question…

when CSFBL gets up and running again (hopefully sometime next week or im gonna have to go on a killing spree :) ) all our teams will be intact, and we will continue on from where we were when this crash happened…

if you are talking about CSBB (the next version of CSFBL which will have a million new features and be awesome :) ) then only leagues that are active will be transfered over… but you dont have to worry about that for a long time, because it wont be ready for a while…

  37. Rew Says:

Brian great to here the news. About picking the server up I don’t have to be to work till around 2:45 pm so I’m available to pick it up. just tell me how an when and were to go with it after I hit the SI I kind of know around were you are any ways from my journeys to the Coke plant by the bridge.
Any ways just offering my part to help, oh and 5/8 sheet rock on the walls goes along way in sound proofing your storage room. ;) E-mail me if you want me to do this and I’ll get the info and give you mine as well

  38. Chris G. Says:

Assuming there was no damage to the hard drive (which we aren’t 100% sure about until we get the server in our hands), all of the data from the game should be intact. So one Brian figures out what happened to the server and gets it running, the game should be at where it was last week.

  39. starwalker Says:

My son’s a drywaller, he might hang the sheet rock for you. (Of course, he’d probably want paid and his expenses from Oklahoma to New York). LOL, or as my friends from Thailand say, 55555.

  40. DeltaKoz Says:

Chris, quick question regarding that. IF the hard drive is damaged…you sa you have backups, right? What exactly does that mean? How often is a backup updated? Once again…not very good at understanding computers.

  41. Chris G. Says:

The server has what is called RAID, which in simple terms means that there are 3 hard drives in the server the exact same size and data is duplicated on each of the drives. This allows the server to survive 1 hard drive failure and stay running until a replacement drive arrives. Then when the replacement drive arrives, the data is synced back up.

However, if 2 of the hard drives failed, we are in trouble.

I believe the backups are stored on the server hard drive, since the backups are so huge. Brian was planning to spend some of the new server on an external hard drive to handle these backups, but that didn’t happen before our recent events.

Basically, assuming we don’t have two hard drives that failed or are failing, we should be in good shape data wise. If two of the drives failed (which we don’t think happened, but we don’t know for sure until Brian looks at the server in person), then we are in deep trouble.

But let’s not sweat the small stuff :) I am almost certain the data is fine.

Arrius: “Will the new CSFBL still have the old teams in it? I finally had a good team with some good players and I’d like to know if I’m still gonna have the same team.”

The plan is to do this, but we have not ironed out the details as to exactly how it will occur.

As for those concerned about a hard drive failure — I highly doubt this was the case.

Rew — if you have my cell number give me a call, otherwise email me and I’ll send it to you. I appreciate the offer if we can work out the details.

  45. Packerken Says:

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting The Batter’s Box! We appreciate the opportunity to
assist you. I am curious about the CSFBL. I Googled it and came across
some interesting stuff. I am sure you are looking for sponsors to get your

  62. modenwelder Says:

No doubt, you have to think about what you post whenever you do it… If we are searching for sponsors, keep things on the up-and-up, don’t post foolish stuff!

  63. starwalker Says:

There are plenty of people who are trying to find a way to help keep the costs down for this game. They won’t all pan out, I know, but I appreciate all the work that is being done. Let’s quit criticizing based on personality conflicts that might have happened in the past. We all care about this game, that’s why we keep checking in.

  64. Ben Says:

I hate to sound like dissenter, but if I were a sponsor, I think I would like to see the product before I committed to ANYTHING. Trying to get sponsors while the site is down is counter-productive, and when they can see comments like “what’s $1000 to a company…” followed by comments like “$30 may be nothing for you, but for me it’s…” Reading comments like this, as a sponsor, seems far more perilous than snarky comments about other folk’s moms. As a sponsor I would like to know that the people who will see my ads aren’t broke or cheapskates using me to keep their playpen open. Sponsorship is a great way to go, but it should have been looked into AFTER the site was back up and running, trying to get it right now is like shooting yourself in the foot and wondering where all the blood on the floor came from. People’s comments aside, there is no product for a sponsor to look at and get a feel for, asking them to sign on to something unseen is not the way to go.

I applaud your efforts Don, but you’re being overzealous dude.

  65. romans Says:

hey they (anyone interested in sponsoring) is looking at activity i.e. hits on the site and relevance i.e. baseball activists (lol)!
Well no doubt we got the baseball fanatics here, and seems to be a pretty impressive hits total. All I know is I am havin’ serious withdrawal from CSFBL almost as bad as when I tried to kick my caffeine habit. And I’m looking forward to when I can find out whether I come back to win game 5 of the World Series…
BTW if you guys are hurtin’ for some BBall there are a few sites for free i’ve found (none of which are nearly as complete as this site) UBO http://www.ultimatebaseballonline.com/member/myubologin.asp
    it’s not stats it’s actually being a player P 1b 2b etc… Also baseball mogul http://www.sportsmogul.com/Baseball/Index.htm
is free for one season then it repeats 06 season again and again… enough to at least stave off the addiction, until the goods show up! :)

  66. romans Says:

well if this is a repeat post – sorry…
First of all thanks for all the updates and blogsite to put a bandaid on my owie’s. Anyhow just wanted to pass along some information for you addicts. I found a few sites the have helped my through this time of crisis Baseball mogul http://www.sportsmogul.com/Baseball/Index.htm
    and UBO
    http://www.ultimatebaseballonline.com/member/myubologin.asp
neither are of CSFBL caliber mogul you can repeat the 06 season over and over lotsa yummy stats… UBO is fun in it’s own right though you can actually play out the game as a P 1B 2B etc…
    Hope that helps somebody :)
I’m just looking at it like the WS between A’s and Giants that had the huge earthquake postpone the game. … will I win game 5 after play resumes?
Sponsors are looking for relevance and activity i.e. hits on the site. I’m thinking we’ve got some pretty good traffic since the game isn’t even up and running and there are multiple hits per hr.

  67. Heathcoat Says:

Anyone who knows about internet gaming knows that community forums spice up things, and produce amny hits. Without a forum with a bunch of colorful comments, less hits, less ads seen, less money. Sponsors know what to look for and thier jobs. Being silly or ‘childish’ in an online gaming community is all part of the whole. Lighten up :)

  68. Michael Fitterer Says:

I agree with the sentiment posted a couple posts above me. We musn’t bring sponsors to the site until Brian gets a functional version of the game back up, so they can see the look and feel of the site, and check out the features. No point in having a sponsor pay for anything before the product is even operational again. Id continue to gather the sponsors, and wait for the game to come back up later this week before contacting them seriously. Id send out feelers and see if companies are interested in sponsoring PERIOD right now, then later when the game comes back up, email them back and give them the visuals, the facts, and everything they need to make a decision. Seems only in the best interest of the game in my opinion.

  69. D Man Says:

If you would have seen the info requested that Brian sent me about hits on the site along with return hits and site statisics, you would understand that when the intial contact is made with a potential sponsor that they want to know how many hits per day/month and the state of the game, the state of the game is explained in depth to everyone of them….sponsors really aren’t looking at seeing what they are sponsoring before commiting..the history of CSFBL is what will get sponsors.

  70. Ace Says:

So… anyone know if Rew’s idea to help pickup the server was a success? I’m just itching for new info. I think this blog is almost as addictive as the game.

  71. Crocko33 Says:

    Ace,

You’re the one that I want!

  72. Chris G. Says:

As far as I know, the server hasn’t been picked up yet. Brian is working on coordinating that for sometime this week.

Brian was going to order the FiOS line today.

Hopefully we will have some rough dates on when we will be back up in the next few days.

  73. D Man Says:

I already know the timeline for being back on line…but think I should keep that to myself.

  74. Ace Says:

    I got chills. They’re multiplyin’.

  75. hawk-champ Says:

You’re right Ben, it isn’t the right time to search for sponsors, but you can already starting evaluate some.

  76. D Man Says:

Funny thing is, those sponsors we shouldn’t be looking for yet are very interested at this time…sorry guys but based on my experiences I must disagree with you…especially if you knew the technique being applied. :)

  77. Ben Says:

Then why do we need to watch what we say here?

  79. D Man Says:

They are interested in the game Ben, they ask for stats that have been provided to me by Brian,

These sites that are interested in sponsoring are interested in the language used, if they sponsor then CSFBL will also be linked into their Web Sites, children will click on that, and since I am only targeting Baseball related sites at the moment there might be several minors clicking on CSFBL, one correspondence back to me mentioned his site had done this once before and had to opt out because of the context of that sites forums…I think here we need to show we care about CSFBL and will support all decisions and directions it goes in, at the moment those who have been contacted get directed here when goggling CSFBL, thats all I am saying, if you don’t care about the possibilities CSFBL has at the moment then by all means smack talk away…

  80. D Man Says:

    No torture G,
    No blackmail G,

Just one heck of a Marketing strategy thought up just for CSFBL…:)

  81. BOOGIE DOWN ENIGMA Says:

how about verizon providing the hook up for free (or at least a discount) in return for csfbl providing verizon a banner on every single page on csfbl? they help us, we help them. surely, if verizon has the $$$ to plaster all over every MLB stadium, they would like to have their banner plastered all over CSFBL as well, especially if it does not cost them anything. all it would take is one or two people a month on the CSFBL web site clicking on the verizon banner and signing a contract for a verizon cell phone or internet connection. there have been over 25000 hits in the past week on this web site. surely then of those 25000 hits, there would be ten to twenty people clicking on a verizon banner and then one or two people a month signing a verizon contract through the verizon web site after clicking on the csfbl verizon banner. wouldn’t verizon break even with that trade? in fact, verizon would be making money off of it past the first $70 a month we send them through csfbl users clicking on the banner and getting services and phones and accessories through verizon.

    just a thought.

do not delete whomever the censoring deleter is. my last 4 posts have all been deleted for no apparent reason even though no offensive material was included.

wasting my breath. this will be deleted.

love the game. love the site. no love for the censor though. someone is trying to control the influx of ideas. watch who you surround yourself with brian. judging from what i have seen this past week, you may end up saying et tu brute to those who seem most loyal to this game.

yeah DMan! Screw you for helping brian, helping CSFBL, and spending your free time doing it! Jerk!

    Anytime Delta… lol :)

  91. Packerken Says:

well, to be totally honest, D man asked Chris to edit his posts as well.

  92. xdude Says:

D-Man, if you still have my aol im, gimme a holler. we’ll chat about your plan

  93. sparkysboy Says:

That this game is capable of attracting enough sponsor revenue to continue operating as a free site, and to adequately compensate those who run it for their time/talent etc. – well, I don’t doubt it for a moment.

And… that some here – all of whom share a passion for OUR beloved game – are gettin’ perhaps a little bit snippy, ahhh well… just a sign that we’re all missing the game.

We’ve a great game here with exciting and promising future possibilities. Savvy (and appropriate to the site) sponsors will recognize the occasional snippy or juvenile blog comments for what they are. These particular comments will in no way blind potential sponsors to the real truth this ‘downtime blog’ demonstrates so clearly… that many people are very passionate about CSFBL.

I think a potential sponsor would be excited by our exuberant (if sometimes peckish) passion for OUR game, as demonstrated by this very blog.

    ~sparkysboy~

  94. KMils Says:

The whole 26000 hits thing scares me a little bit. I mean, CSFBL has been down for a week, right? And despite being a reasonably large game, 26000 hits on a bare-bones blog with like five posts is astonishing. You people need lives.

Of course, I just finished updating my Excel spreadsheets with all of my player information on the 2oth or so, so I have everything I need on my home computer. I guess I have nothing to complain about.

I’ve enjoyed the week off. Given me some time to do some gaming, update my 12gigs of music with album art, clean my dorm room (twice, it got dirty again) and generally be lazy…

Wait a minute. This server crash is a little too convenient. It’s almost like…

    *gasp*

Brian intentionally shut down the server!

Now, I know I whiffed slightly on the “CSBB DOESN’T EXIST” front (although I have not seen it yet, despite my imposed deadline of ten months ago, so it technically doesn’t exist), but this is perfect.

Brian’s staring at his rising costs. The game is crashing, and his code can’t handle the stress. So what does he do? A controlled burn. He knows that the server might crash. So he takes it down himself, on his terms, hoping to drive costs down by not paying for the server AND getting rid of some users in the process.

Pure genius, Brian. But again, I have foiled you. You’ll have to try harder than that. I have to give myself a pat on the back, as I am the highest form of intelligence in the universe… self appointed of course, as the highest form of intelligence in the universe bows to no man.

    Yay for self-indulgence.

In other news, despite my apparent fear of the 26000 hits, I am somewhat CSFBL deprived and thusly ranting like a moron. Though that makes me part of the majority of CSFBL users.

    Especially those in BU.

    *zing*

  95. sparkysboy Says:

Well cripes, KMils… I HAD a life. Until Brian/Brain destroyed it a week or so ago. Heh.

    ~sparkysboy~

***Conspiracy theories… something to spin, to kill time, to ease the pain while awaiting The Return of the Game***

P.S. Anyone think Brian just might’ve been, well, you know… the Mysterious Dude in the Grassy Knoll? Yeah… I think so too. :)

  96. Michael Fitterer Says:

There is no reason to really be fighting, pecking, squabbling, whatever you call it, over any of this. While DMan is going against what I have learned and believe to be proper marketing techniques in this situation, he IS and HAS done something for the benefit of US and the CSFBL. He is sharing his time, his ideas, and going out and working free of charge (doing the same things I get paid to do) because he is passionate (like me) about the game and the culture the game/us has created. I greatly appreciate his, Chris’, Brians, and anyone else behind the scenes I do not know about, who are keeping us all up to date and holding out hope that with this latest set of revelations of plans, that the CSFBL could actually come back better then ever after this mini crisis. Thank you for all of your help guys. I may stand on the other side of the fence on some marketing theories and such, but nonetheless I truly appreciate it!

God I cant wait for the game to be back!

  97. D Man Says:

First off I am not marketing anything, I am establishing “pipelines” , thats the first step in Marketing..

Second , if your putting together a Softball Team but have only an idea and committed players then you find sponsors for that team, the team is untested but the sponsors are in the “Sports Field” and you get them to committ to a Sponsorship of a team that no one has any idea how well they will be.. Here I am the Coach, and I have a team that consist of 1,000 players, 25-40 who say they can cover their own cost of tournaments, league entry fees, uniforms and equipment, 950 who I haven’t heard anything from, I need to think about those guys, by searching for sponsors now all it does is establish pipelines for Brian, because once a potential sponsor contacts me with interest then I put them in contact with Brian and he takes over from there.
Right now there is only a certain Merchandising Field your interested in and its the Baseball related field, Apparrel, Uniforms, Equipment, those are the ones that are interested in a Baseball Site right away, Why? Because CSFBL has Little League Coaches, Minor League Players, Softball Players and a few affiliated with MLB, so this makes the perfect breeding ground for interest from the Sports Merchandising industry.

XDude you have an E Mail,

Also, I have figured out that if someone won’t come here and use their CSFBL name to be recognized or won’t say who they actually are like zinger has then I really don’t pay much attention to their concerns as too what I am trying to do, if I recognize them from CSFBL then I listen to what they are saying in their post here and take their concerns into consideration.
What I am doing is in no way damaging CSFBL in relation to potential Sponsors, If Brian thought it was he would tell me to stop, he has done everything but tell me to stop, he has provided me with the stat history for hits and such and has givin me access too all the info that potential Sponsors have asked for.

  98. Ace Says:

If you asked me to sponsor a softball team, but all you had to show me was one scrawny guy wearing a “Softball Outage Blog” t-shirt, I’d probably pass.

  99. liner Says:

thanks to d man and everyone who’s trying to get this going. i know nothing about marketing and the like but it seems like a lot of people do, couple that with the passion we have for the game and our game should be back and better than ever.

  100. Whhoossshhh Says:

    This is one tough crowd….:(

  101. D Man Says:

    Thank liner…

  102. crocko33 Says:

Starting 9th day of game downness.

    **turning purple**

Need new update, must know how close we are to more gameness.

    **faints**

  103. D Man Says:

    Crocko, send me an e-mail…

  104. Oliver_Stone Says:

There is no csfbl – it is a conspiracy by the government to hide the Iniut/Contra scandel …

Seriously, this community benefits from those who fight for it and look to involve the gaming experiance, and marketing is about establishing relationships and following leads – opening a line communication is vital, and once csfbl is back up (hopefully by the end of the week), the hook (the game), and the product (the community that plays the game, as evidenced by the hit stats and the forums), should sell themselves.

Compared to other internet gaming communities, we have a large number of members in the work force, as opposed to high school or middle school – people with steady jobs and income to dispose of.

  105. D Man Says:

When is your next movie due out Oliver?

  106. Ace Says:

I should say in addition that I DO greatly appreciate D-Man (and everyone else)’s efforts. I just don’t know that soliciting sponsors before the game is back up and running is the most effective method. BUT, again, the efforts are still appreciated greatly.

  107. D Man Says:

    Ace,
Thanks for the comment, but please remember that Brian knows exactly what I am doing and if he thought it wasn’t in the Sites best interest at this time he would tell me to cease…

  108. The Pep Says:

Hi there, just one of those quiet members that enjoys the CSFBL daily (more like hourly) …. just wanted to thank the incredibly considerate and active management core of this site for everything. Can’t wait to get back up and running.

  109. Bill Says:

any new updates on this? Ive lost 45 lbs and my hair has started falling out in the 9 days CSFBL has been down… someone help me!

in other news in regard to CSFBL being down, I already revealed the conspiracy like 6 days ago… its so simple…

If anyone is familiar with Ciphers, the most common/easiest one is the Caesar Cipher. And the most common shift in a Caesar Cipher is a shift of 1…

what this means is, if you had the message “Hi” and wanted to code it, you would shift each letter over 1 in the alphabet… so “H” becomes “I” and “I” becomes “J”… so the message “HI” would be coded as “IJ”

    get it…

so what I discovered, is that “CSFBL” doesn’t really stand for Computer Simulated Fantasy Baseball League… it is actually a message already in code… so I decided to decode “CSFBL” by reverse Caesar Shifting “CSFBL” to get the original message… aka “C” is really “B” and so on…

So what did i figure out… if you decode “CSFBL”, it turns into “Break”

    coincidence… i think not…

if you dont believe me, try it for yourself… CSFBL stands for Break

dont use the cipher code on “CSFBL”… “CSFBL” is the message as it is already coded…

so reverse cipher “CSFBL” to get the original message…

    you guys get it now

  110. Bill Says:

whoops… left the last couple sentences on from something i had copy and pasted… so it doesnt really make sense… oh well

  111. D Man Says:

Bill, send me an e-mail at

    donnielee08@peoplepc.com

deceipher LOL as your code word…

  112. crocko33 Says:

    Hahahaha….that’s good stuff Bill.

    (in other news)
    I miss my BREAK!

  113. scrubb Says:

My team was playing it’s best ball of it’s career. I miss them.

  114. Ben Says:

I’m glad a few people have inside knowledge, but can someone post an update for all of us? It’s irritating enough knowing the site is down, but now this need for a secret handshake/password just to find out what the status on when we can expect it back up is crossing the line.

And for what it’s worth, if I wanted to spew venom a Don, I’d have done so, as I have stated, I applaud his efforts, it just makes more sense to wait until the site is up to look for sponsors. Despite the cool confidence that sponsors don’t look at what the are sponsoring, I can assure you they very much do, stats and hit counts aren’t the only factor that comes into play when dolling out advertising dollars.

  115. Bill Says:

I hope we will be losing your service Jew…

    oh what a shame

  116. garf112 Says:

The best part about this “Break” is that I was able to get almost all of my fantasy baseball preparation done. Half of it doesn’t even make sense to me anymore because I’ve looked at it so much, but what I do know is that I will be keeping Rocco Baldelli…

Anyway, thanks D Man for all of your great work.

I need the game back, though. I was so close to finally having the Arkansas Razorbacks rebuilt into a contender.

  117. D Man Says:

Ben and jew, if you both disclose your CSFBL names to me in an e mail so I can recognize who you are I will speak with you…But rest assured that this game is coming back real soon. Its not my position to disclose stuff here, I will to my friends privately , on this forum its up to the C.M.’s or Brian himself to update you…they haven’t because they are very busy, I know for a fact Brian is so busy he isn’t getting much sleep at night this week.

  118. D Man Says:

Just so you guys know, I don’t have privledged info, I am aware of target dates and ETA of CSFBL resuming on line…based on being a CC in an e-mail communication between Brian and a potential Sponsor.

  119. GB RAY Says:

I got turned to CSFBL about 2 yrs ago, when another site I played on decided to call it quits (ESPN CLASSIC BASEBALL) basically played that for aprox. 4 yrs….got turned on here by a departing forum message near that games end…though this game wasn’t quite accessible with stats my past game delivered, it was still baseball simulation (something I seem to have always enjoyed, even as a kid, rolling the dice playing strat-o-matic) slowly the game here has made strides adding stats the other game gave vs RHP-LHP and so on. This game here has been an absolute joy for me, watching it grow with additional stat lines being added and saving me money from many nites I’m sure I would’ve went to the Bar. I do feel guilty I never donated…I apologize for that. I wrote earlier in this blog, like day 2 or 3 that I never used the message board in the league I played in (10-11 seasons 3 WS championships) which sadly is probably going to be demolished after the next update beause lack of owners in the league. Anyways I tried to write on the message board from time to time, for some reason as I recall It just wouldn’t let me. The only communication I had with fellow owners was the little box under the trade propositions when I wanted to make a deal……I hope to get alittle more involved with the message board during my next league I play in, if I can figure out just how too, Once again….ty for constantly improving the game step by step from just what I’ve seen during my play the past 2 yrs. PS. this is just my 2nd message on a board during that time…….GBRAY

  120. Ben Says:

I dunno, I think my CSFBL name is 2FLI, but Ben is my real name. Regardless, I would rather the info be posted to all.

  121. D Man Says:

When the CSFBL has info to post , and the time to post it , rest assured this is the first place they are coming Ben.

  122. smartbenny24 Says:

Most of my teams weren’t doing too well before the break. Maybe they will use this downtime for R & R in order to come back with a vengance.

And thanks to D Man and others for your work to solicit sponsors!

  123. Realmwalker Says:

    JUST A HEADS UP:

Don’s sponsorship work and his credit service are greatly appreciated. And to confirm Don, he does NOT have “special” info. Mostly because the ETA is pretty shaky at best and is dependent on Brians capacity to actually GET the server. Once he has it, only then can any true timelines be established.

And to confirm Don, Brian has sent CSFBL related web information to the sponsor (battersbox.com) whom Don contacted.

The Development Team and CM’s have a conference call scheduled for tonight. As it is we are all busy, and if the server was in a more accessible location it would have been retrieved already, as it is…we are still waiting for a FIRM ETA on pretty much everything based on the servers condition.

FUTURE CSFBL: We have been moving forward with the idea that CSFBL will remain primarily FREE with a credit system to purchase enhancements and we are ironing out a “credit” system to allow just that.

After this evenings Conference Call we will likely have some more concrete updates for everyone (hopefully)…thanks to everyone for their comments during this down time.

    Thanks.

  124. D Man Says:

    There is your update….

  125. D Man Says:

    Realmwalker,

Can you send me an e-mail to
    donnielee08@peoplepc.com

I no longer have your e-mail addy and need to communicate with you at your convience.

  126. barroomhero Says:

Good update Realm. It is appreciated. And how much did you donate jew? If you pull back your donation, I will replace it with my money. I care about this site and game and a great deal of the players. I want to keep it great and will do what I can to help in that regard. God knows I use enough of its bandwidth and teams.

  127. Anthony Says:

First off, thanks to Brian, Chris G., D-Man, and all the others who are working in front and behind the scenes. I am one of many who miss the game, and I truly appreciate all of your Herculean efforts to make things happen.

Yes, my CSFBL (and real name) is Anthony, and I am a CSFBL-aholic!

I can’t wait to get the game back. I miss it dearly. (In an unrelated matter, I seem to have some strange people living in my house who claim they know me. They refer to themselves as “family”. I vaguely remember the 8 year old boy, currently referred to as “Boy” or “Son”…)

  128. Ben Says:

Thank you Realm! That’s what I think most of us have been waiting all weekend to hear!

  129. D Man Says:

Hey jew, show me proof that you have actually donated to CSFBL and how much , I promise to fully refund your donation plus 15% out of my pocket.

  130. D Man Says:

Hey, when you guys give out thanks, please include Babarfloyd, Harborpirate and Realmwalker as well as Brian and Chris, these guys are the ones responsible for getting this game back up…I am only volunteering my time for something they don’t have the time to do right now..

  131. D Man Says:

Chris, this jew guy needs moderated,

Also jew , if you get Brian to confirm to me that you donated $100, I will send you $115 right after he confirms it.

  132. D Man Says:

Dude, your a sad individual, especially when you say this part

“I’d be happy to confirm ‘it’, but Brian seems like he is too busy sucking off ole’ steinbreiner to give a sh1t about this site.”

You have no idea what kind of heart ache that statement is going to bring you if we ever figure out who you are…

  133. babarfloyd Says:

    >I for one like the idea of taking a site that doesn’t live up to what is advertised (8 games a day) and charging people for that service.

I think you missed Realm’s update above…here it is again:

“FUTURE CSFBL: We have been moving forward with the idea that CSFBL will remain primarily FREE with a credit system to purchase enhancements and we are ironing out a “credit” system to allow just that.:”

This means that you will most likely still be able to have as many teams as you want in any league for free but if you want a Team Blog then you can pay for it, if you want a Team Logo then you can pay for it, etc. But the core game will still remain free.

  134. Hiredgoon Says:

I know it’s frustrating to not have CSFBL right now guys, bBut who knows the difficulty that surrounds getting the server back to Brian’s. I’m sure if it was just a simple pick up it would have been done by now.

The other thing to remember is that the server being at his place only helps if the connection he needs is set up and good to go.

And don’t forget the damage to the server itself needs to be addressed too.

Let’s just try to hang in there and see what the next few days bring.

  135. liner Says:

some people take the game’s downtime a bit differently

  136. barroomhero Says:

Well, considering that you haven’t actually paid for anything other than a donation at this point in time, Jew (1 or 2 whatever), then I guess that we will not be seeing you pay for service.

Not to mention have you not seen that the ideas that seem to be centered not around charging for the game, but rather for charging for extras in addition. Now, you can choose to take these extras, or you can choose not to. I may have this wrong, but that is the impression I am getting from what I am hearing. Therefore, you won’t be charged to play, you will be charged if you want something more.

But, do you want to do that? My guess is no, but that is only what I am getting from your words on this blog. Maybe I am wrong. Time will tell I suppose.

  137. babarfloyd Says:

Brian is paying $170 a month to lease his server.

I have a server at home that is at least as fast as his server if not faster (2 Opteron 244 CPU (single core) with 2 Gigs of RAM).

I also might be getting a newer server this week (possibly today) that has 2 Dual-Core Opteron CPU’s with 2-4 Gigs of RAM.

We will be discussing tonight whether or not I should send my server(s) to Brian. This opens up all kinds of possibilities:

    * If I send 1 Server to Brian he could use it to replace his current server saving $170 a month.

    * If I send 1 Server to Brian he could use it as the Sim Server and his current server would run the Web Server and DB server.

    * If I send 2 Servers to Brian he could use 1 as the Web Server and DB server and the other as the Sim Server and he could get rid of his leased server saving $170.

  138. babarfloyd Says:

Again, we are going to be discussing all possibilities tonight so don’t take what I’m saying as written in stone, but I believe that if we use a separate server as the Sim Server we’ll be able to do 8 games a day no problem. Right now the Sim Engine has to fight for CPU cycles with SQL and IIS.

It wasn’t cost effective to run 2 servers before because Brian would have had to pay a couple hundred dollars more a month to host 2 servers instead of 1. Now that he’s moving the server home, he could run as many as he wants for free (minus the extra electricity costs).

  139. D Man Says:

Heck send him 2 Rick, things go better in pairs….;)

  140. liner Says:

    yeah rick, send him 2

    ——————————————

LMAO, what is the worst possible thing you could do? This should be good.–

We do have a hiredgoon in this game.

  142. D Man Says:

Jew , I have copied the statement by you that I quoted and that statement really bugs me…I will say that in 5 years of playing this game ..I have never seen anyone make a statement like that about Brian, if I figure out who you are and your still around CSFBL when it comes back on line I will do my best to get anyone who plays in any leagues with you to not trade with you … I must admit that figuring out who you actually are will be one HUGE task..and can’t guarantee I will ever figure it out…but if by chance I do…then I do…

  143. D Man Says:

Are you actually having fun? how many different names you using here now 5? you remind me of a guy named Joe Pasquale.

  144. DiMo Says:

Come on, guys. Jew is obviously baiting you so please just ignore him. He doesn’t deserve a response.

  145. D Man Says:

right on Dimo, I was just thinking the same thing…

We can carry on here without replying to those comments..lets do it…lets boycott his comments all 5 names and carry on with what we are here for.

If he is ignored enough then he may decide not to post anything…

  146. Ben Says:

Too late, you already took the bait.

  147. twinwin Says:

I’ll admit when the site crashed, things seemed bleak. It looked like not only would we have to dig deep into our wallets for Brian to afford to run the game, but it would still be using the old server. Seeing babarfloyd and d man’s generosity towards Brian in try to help him out as well as some other users and the reduced cost, it is definetly great to see.

When I get my credit card, (as I am 18) I’ll be donating what I can spare to the site. I can’t wait till it comes back online.

  148. crocko33 Says:

We need to get CSFBL (BREAK) set-up as a charitable organization so my donations can be tax deductible.

  149. BigTweed Says:

    ROGER BLANKS………Where are you?!?!?!?

  150. D Man Says:

Who the heck is Roger Blanks?

  151. D Man Says:

Just want to give those that care an update on what I am doing,

I had 2 more possible sponsors contact me thus far today….they have been sent the info that Brian has provided me access too…its now in their Reps hands as to if they want to take it further,

I have paid for Brian’s Credit Card software and had it deemed “Promotional Goods” thru my Company which allowed me to get him a better % rate that he is now aware of.

The process is now set to be put in motion upon Brian confirming he has the available time for the paperwork that needs done.

  152. D Man Says:

    Extremely illegal…

    Maybe in Germany….but not here…

  153. babarfloyd Says:

    >Seeing babarfloyd and d man’s generosity towards Brian in try to help him out as well as some other users and the reduced cost, it is definetly great to see.

The reason I’m helping (besides the fact that I’m on the dev team) is because this is the game that I’ve always wanted to play and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure I can still play it. :)

  154. Chris G. Says:

Well we have a few ole friends who won’t be bothering us again, hopefully.

  155. Bill Says:

thank chris… i know i just caught up on the last 20 posts or so, and just from what was said i can tell you did some cleaning lol

hey crocko… instead of calling it CSFBL (BREAK) we should call it BREAK (CSFBL)

now anyone have any ideas of what i should do for the next 4 hours?

  156. The Pep Says:

Its always sad that people like this (Jew_v2 and his various aliases), whether they are donors or not in the past, feel somehow empowered by anonimity to make ridiculous posts like what I have read. It is no doubt your freedom of speech right in this forum, but it by no means is making you sound anything more than a spoiled, obnoxious person that this site does not need in any capacity IMO.

As one of the general game playing public let me say that I am absolutely positive that there are very few of us that do not appreciate all that has been done, and being done with this site. It has had its kinks, but it has always been a place where people gather to enjoy a love of baseball, and a love of the CSFBL experience. I deeply regret that one sour pill can seem to be the majority of “the voice”, when it by far and large is not …… and especially when it is one who can not seem to take all into account and have a little patience while hard working, and all too evidently very concerned staff work to fix this, and more than likely once again improve CSFBL for its current and future members.

Jew_v2, how about you grow up for a bit and let these guys do what they do. They are not here to meet some schedule you have conceived in your mind as being what is right, they are working on it, and I guarantee care FAR, FAR, FAR more for this game and its community than you do. You have made that plainly eveident with your purposeful abuse and comment – - we get it already, you are not happy. If you want that feeling repsected, be respectful to others.

Please leave this space free of your “humor” so that it can be used for updates and constructive comment as it was meant.

    Please.
    Thank You.

“The reason I’m helping (besides the fact that I’m on the dev team) is because this is the game that I’ve always wanted to play and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure I can still play it. :)

My sentiments exactly..except I am not on any developement team..

  158. Anthony Says:

    Oh man…

No (BREAK) CSFBL, spring training doesn’t start for another couple weeks, the Hot Stove League is cooled off, and I don’t leave on vacation for another 2 months.

    Withdrawal…symptoms…overwhelming…must…resist..

  159. Chris G. Says:

Well in my case, I try to look at the bright side:

    1) At least the Pats are in the Super Bo…oh, yeah, nevermind.

    2) At least the Celtics have won….oh they are on a 11 game losing streak, their own emergency room at Mass General, and have some guy pretending to be a coach…let’s move right along.

    3) At least the Bruins have 3 wins in their last 10 games….umm yeah…

    4) Well, all things considered, the Sox finally have a right-fielder, thanks to clauses Drew’s contract that allows them to get out of it if he has shoulder issues again. Oh wait, he hasn’t played over 146 games in his career, has 5 of his 9 seasons with 109 games or less, and has hit 20 or more HR’s just 3 times in his career. That is what I call protection for Manny Ortiz.

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  160. Youth Minister Says:

Well, I just graduated college and was all excited about my newly created team and all the free time I have, and then boom…DOWN goes the site. Now I just sit and wait. Awaiting the return of my lost game.
If it doesn’t return soon, I’m gonna start spending money that I don’t have….that’s never good!

  161. Youth Minister Says:

Hey Chris, my Rangers just signed Sammy Sosa…how do you think that one is gonna turn out!? :/

  162. D Man Says:

The Rangers will release Sammy before opening day…he is gun shy, has been every since he took it good on the noggin.

  163. Youth Minister Says:

haha yeah that is what everyone here is saying too. well, it looks like another year of playoff hopes, only to be disappointed by the end of the year! That’s why I need CSFBL sooo bad and soon!

  164. romans Says:

Slammy Soda heh heh they’d have been better off signing Carlos Pena… I’ll be surprised if Sosa makes any kind of impact, anywhere! As a player that is.
Hey, let’s get a ticker going for countdown to CSFBL that would be sweet! Even if it is off by a little bit who cares just to give us all some hope :)

  165. Bill Says:

if anyones interested, a few of us (thanks to comfortablylomb) have taken refuge in this forum until BREAK (CSFBL) is back…

    http://chibeta.brightverse.com/index.php

we are starting our own simulation using Blackholedaves board game… were calling it DSFBL (Dave Simulated Fantasy Baseball League) :) and its pretty interesting…

we are also in the works of DSFBL version 2.0… the players will be made up of any CSFBL Owners who are interested in becoming a player on a team… it will be like CSFBL for the owners…

check out the forums if your bored

I’m surprised the Giants didn’t sign him as part of their “going younger” strategy this season. [rolls eyes] ;)

    BEAR DOWN CHICAGO BEARS !!!!

  169. Anthony Says:

at least my Indians didn’t sign him…instead we have Jason Michaels (ugh!) David Delucci and Trot Nixon. Hope Grady Sizemore’s been resting; methinks he’ll be covering a lot of ground…

  170. Chris G. Says:

You will like Trot, he’s the ultimate dirt dog (when he can stay healthy).

  171. Youth Minister Says:

I think you’ll like Delucci also, he was a real fan and player favorite while in Texas. We sure miss his great OBP!

  172. Anthony Says:

Nixon and Delucci are nice; don’t get me wrong. The problem I’m having is I thought we could use a leadoff hitter (and move Sizemore to the three spot), a right handed power hitter, and a defensive replacement at SS. I think the bullpen will be fine; Shapiro did a great job fixing that troublesome spot. Now we’re trying to figure out where Garko fits. The team has uncommon depth, and I think you’ll see why the AL Central should be one of the toughest divisions in baseball.
