As all of you know, the CSFBL web site and forums went down yesterday sometime during the afternoon. I have created this blog to keep our users up-to-date on what we know about the outage. Here is what we know so far:
- Brian tried to remote into the server. However it gives off an error message about “winlogon.exe” and promptly boots him from the server. As a result, Brian can’t reboot the server himself.
- Brian hopes that a simple reboot will fix the problem. However, the crash could also be the sign of something much deeper that is wrong (corrupted Windows installation, hardware issue, etc.). We simply don’t know yet.
- Brian contacted the ISP where the server is hosted about having them reboot it. They promptly (about 10 hours later) returned his e-mail saying it would take $125 a hour to do it. Brian promptly replied how many hours it would take to press the power button twice and the ISP said that with travel time it would come to about a hour. Earliest they can do it is tomorrow.
- Brian is currently waiting for a reply from the ISP about whether he can go there in person and if there is any cost to do this. In the past, there hasn’t been, so he is slightly optimistic.
As of right now, Brian is waiting to hear from the ISP about whether he can go in himself and reboot the server for free.
Currently there is no ETA on when the CSFBL will be back up. We are crossing our fingers that it will be sometime this weekend, but it all depends on whether the crash is something a simple reboot will fix, or if it is much worse. Brian also has to find the time to get to the ISP, which isn’t simple if any of you know how driving in NYC is like.
Brian will be posting on here shortly with some more details and with some questions for our users.
- Chris

“How many hours would it take to press the power button twice?”
That’s pretty good, right there.
January 23, 2007 at 8:32 pm
Yeah that definitely was the best line to come out of this.
January 23, 2007 at 8:37 pm
What ISP is this? Whoever it is will never get any of my money.
January 23, 2007 at 8:40 pm
They won’t be getting ours for much longer, that is for certain.
January 23, 2007 at 9:13 pm
This sure has taken up a lot of my time. Imagine, the site being down is actually more time-consuming for me than the site being up.
January 23, 2007 at 9:19 pm
this sucks, not that I’ve been checking my teams, but still it sucks. I actaully have two days off and planned on some major maintenance.
Xdude
January 23, 2007 at 9:20 pm
It costs $125 an hour to have an ISP fix a problem with one of their own servers? wtf!
January 23, 2007 at 9:26 pm
This is rough, im going through withdrawls man…
Burakki, i think out blockbuster trade broke the CSFBL
January 23, 2007 at 9:28 pm
I think the League Of Legends thread in their newly created TRASH TALK Forum destroyed the server.
January 23, 2007 at 9:53 pm
I want to have the job of the guy who is getting paid $125 to push a couple buttons. Where do I sign up for that?
January 23, 2007 at 9:59 pm
“hehehe, this will show all those cheap bastards that didn’t donate! oh crap, was that outloud?!?”
That’s funny stuff
January 23, 2007 at 9:59 pm
Sorry for being one of those cheap bastards, but I just signed up 3 days ago and this doesn’t look very impressive.
January 23, 2007 at 10:04 pm
bad luck for you, this is the worst is has been in a long long time
January 23, 2007 at 10:08 pm
The good news, is I think we have the best guy on our side to take care of this, even though he has something to do with the Yankees, more good news, at least my wife thinks so, is that the site is down, I think she is hoping it will be March before its fixed.
January 23, 2007 at 10:10 pm
Even though he has something to do with the Yankess, I am confident that our guy Brian will get us going eventually. Best guy for the job. My wife on the other hand, is hoping this will not get fixed until March..
January 23, 2007 at 10:12 pm
Sorry about that, our wonderful computer system at work sometimes does stupid things, and I thought it deleted what I said, so I said it again, and presto, it was there after all. LOL
January 23, 2007 at 10:23 pm
BHD is depressed without the Showdown, IFL, and LoL forums, so he’s trying to bring his rapid posting skills here.
January 23, 2007 at 10:23 pm
Welcome to the world of computers
January 23, 2007 at 10:26 pm
The May 2004 outage last for 6 days. That was before any kind of centralized forums, though.
January 23, 2007 at 10:30 pm
i can always play world of warcraft until it’s fixed
January 23, 2007 at 10:34 pm
I think I’m going through withdrawal too. I’ve been checking to see if the site is up for about every hour since it went down.
January 23, 2007 at 10:36 pm
Today, I actually had so much free time I hooked up my old TV. I haven’t watched TV at home in nearly a year.
January 23, 2007 at 10:39 pm
Hope they allow Brian to go there and do it, $125 is silly.
January 23, 2007 at 10:40 pm
this was by far the most productive day of work I have had in 6 months. So…PLEASE FIX IT SOON! I can’t handle that kind of pressure.
January 23, 2007 at 10:40 pm
Hey, I’m playing World of Warcraft while it’s down, too! — Brian
January 23, 2007 at 10:45 pm
azgalore server….look for sizzlelegs
January 23, 2007 at 10:45 pm
Like I said, I am learing new things about my wife, like she got her hair cut apparently a few weeks ago. But that may now change since I now have contact with my csfbl buddies again……
January 23, 2007 at 10:48 pm
I can be patient, even though all three of my leagues were about to have drafts.
January 23, 2007 at 11:10 pm
Just saying hi. I missed you all.
January 23, 2007 at 11:12 pm
The kind of service that costs an ISP business.
Well, back to work…
January 23, 2007 at 11:20 pm
$125 is the cost for bail for most class A misdemeanors, in my experience.
January 23, 2007 at 11:37 pm
I actually got work done today!
$125 for a reboot? Is that serious? I’ve had to manage servers in the past, and the datacenter’s and NOC’s never charged for reboots, or they had it hooked up to an APC reboot system. It’s just part of the service.
I’d pack up business and get away from that place as fast as possible if it were my call.
I’d love to know what the rates for bandwidth, power etc. is for colocation, or just renting servers. Gimme a laugh.
January 23, 2007 at 11:39 pm
Brian you run sex.com? Does the wife know this?
January 23, 2007 at 11:40 pm
The company website does domain hosting services. I work for them, let me know if you are interested in their services.
January 23, 2007 at 11:41 pm
http://www.gamewood.net
oops forgot the site in the post lol
January 23, 2007 at 11:42 pm
In reference to the sex.com thing… if you didn’t see the popup when you moused over the username for Brian, you won’t understand.
January 24, 2007 at 12:13 am
The “Brian” posts above were not me; I deleted them both. I post as “computersims”.

January 24, 2007 at 12:17 am
As for hosting… I need a dedicated server running Windoze 2003 that I can install MS SQL on. It has to have at least 2GB of RAM (4 preferred), 200+ GB disk space (RAID5 preferred), and at least two processors. If you can do that, send me an email!
January 24, 2007 at 12:31 am
how about we compromise and do a CSFBL fundraiser for brian’s cab ride to the ISP site? =) I’ll even pay for the leather glove to slap the bastard who suggested a $125 price tag to push a button.
January 24, 2007 at 12:36 am
Hmmmmm, looks like I’ll be conning the wife into letting me donate some more money. I can tell her it keeps me from looking at pron.
Brian, can I just send you my laptop? You’d have to ad a gig of ram and a hard drive, but that’s less expensive than a whole new server. I mean without CSFBL I have nothing to do on it anyways.
….wait a minute, nevermind
January 24, 2007 at 1:45 am
boy it got lonely in here
January 24, 2007 at 2:14 am
I don’t know what to do with myself right now.
January 24, 2007 at 2:18 am
post here?
January 24, 2007 at 2:36 am
Brian, can I ask how much more it would cost you to buy and host a server? After all this mess, I’d like to see the difference and to see if it would be possible to raise enough $$$?
January 24, 2007 at 2:51 am
never alone. Never fear.
January 24, 2007 at 3:27 am
Dam, bad timing with the new League of Legends just about to start the first off-season…maybe Realm is right and that trash talk thread and the other 1,600+ posts made before it even clicked to the 17th of March 1981 confused the server.
Best of luck with getting it done successfully and painfully (hopefully freely) Brian.
I must say I never realized my work is so boring when I am not actually coaching basketball…but the last couple of days have shown that is actually the case.
January 24, 2007 at 3:50 am
This is brutal. Methinks we will have to have a robust donation drive when all this is done. Hang in there Brian!
January 24, 2007 at 5:03 am
“But that may now change since I now have contact with my csfbl buddies again……”
Exactly, Dave. This forum already has more posts than 1/2 the leagues in CSFBL!
January 24, 2007 at 6:03 am
Brian, thanks for the updates. As others have said, please get stressed out about this. Get it fixed when you can.
This rest is giving me time to try to get the Pirates a winning season on Baseball Mogul 2006. I’m up to 2018 without a winning season!
January 24, 2007 at 6:16 am
Sorry … don’t get stressed out…
January 24, 2007 at 7:41 am
The Kirbman is anxiously awaiting. I actually felt releif when seeing these posts…………I think I’d be a lost puppy without CSFBL Community.
January 24, 2007 at 7:44 am
“This rest is giving me time to try to get the Pirates a winning season on Baseball Mogul 2006. I’m up to 2018 without a winning season!”
You must be playing on a hard level, or you are just rally bad at drafting, cause that game is incredibly easy
January 24, 2007 at 7:44 am
We are patiently waiting Brian….at least we’re trying . : )
It’ll be ready when it’s ready, we all know that. Thanks Brian!
January 24, 2007 at 7:53 am
Meddle, I know what you mean about working! I got so much stuff done yesterday at work and today looks like more of the same. How am I going to explain this once the site comes back up!?!
January 24, 2007 at 8:00 am
Well, on the bright side: at least it finally gave me the chance to watch the last game of the WS 2006…
January 24, 2007 at 8:38 am
I want my donation back. This is bull sh1t.
January 24, 2007 at 8:40 am
Since I have every season’s stats on spreadsheets for The Classic League, I am now spending my time preparing for our league’s second ever WBC. You can take the site down, but you can’t take my stats away!! Mwaahaaahaaa!!!
January 24, 2007 at 8:43 am
Also, it cracks me up how hostile some people get about this. Come on, I work for a Fortune 500 company and we have computer problems all the time that we have to deal with. Stuff like this simply happens…..for this to be only the 2nd large-scale problem in 2 years seems pretty good to me.
January 24, 2007 at 8:49 am
“I want my donation back. This is bull sh1t.” Jew
Settle down Francis. Nice work on keeping the stats Crocko!
January 24, 2007 at 8:52 am
It cracks *me* up how self-aggrandizing some people get. Did I mention that I’m a Senator? I just thought I’d throw it out there because it somehow is the tiniest bit relevant to the discussion.
Aaaanyway – thanks for keeping us posted brian (and others). You don’t know what you have until it’s gone… and right now, I’m dyin’!
January 24, 2007 at 8:59 am
You know, coed badminton on ESPN 2 at 4:30am just doesn’t quite fill the void in my life now that I don’t have CSFBL…..
January 24, 2007 at 9:01 am
How does saying I work for a Fortune 500 company qualify as self-aggrandizing? I didn’t say that I’m the CEO or some big-shot….who knows, maybe I’m a mailroom guy or the mailroom guy’s secretary! The point I was making is that computer problems of a large-scale happen to companies with tons of money, thus there should be a level of acceptance when it happens to a game of this level.
January 24, 2007 at 9:05 am
“Also, it cracks me up how hostile some people get about this. Come on, I work for a Fortune 500 company and we have computer problems all the time that we have to deal with. Stuff like this simply happens…..for this to be only the 2nd large-scale problem in 2 years seems pretty good to me.”
No kidding, bad stuff just happens sometimes when you’re dealing with computers.
January 24, 2007 at 9:06 am
Dont make me break out Flight Sim 2004, fly to NY and buzz the Co-Lo’s sight … all I need is an address and its a done deal.
January 24, 2007 at 9:07 am
Where’s barroom? I need to discuss last’s night TV-watching….
January 24, 2007 at 9:10 am
“How does saying I work for a Fortune 500 company qualify as self-aggrandizing?”
It’s not self-aggrandizing. It helped to give some perspective to how the problems experienced here at our little game are common all the way to the top of the business world. I sense some sort of insecurity in its criticism.
January 24, 2007 at 9:10 am
Never realized how empty my life was without csfbl! Urgh! If this isn’t proof that we should all up the ante and throw in some cash for a new server thingy (I don’t know jack about compooters), then I don’t know what is. I have faith we’ll be playing again soon. Maybe this down time will throw a couple of my teams into a tizzy and when they come back….they’ll actually be good!
January 24, 2007 at 9:12 am
I blame this all on Jason Varga.
January 24, 2007 at 9:13 am
Wish I were a senator. :*-(
January 24, 2007 at 9:15 am
You know what, someone needs to check on BRIAN because if he is in the Yankee organization, and he actually got George Costanzas old office, he could be stuck in the desk with Steinbrenner just outside…thus the server could be down for even longer
January 24, 2007 at 9:16 am
Best of luck in getting this resolved. This has actually been good for me since I’ve had some stuff to take care of, but that’s just me.
Still the best game out there, and it’s worth any wait.
January 24, 2007 at 9:17 am
I’m not a senator but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once…..
January 24, 2007 at 9:23 am
you know its bad when everyone who plays CSFBL and has AIM are all online talking to each other wondering what to do… Dave, get your Allstar Board game out… were making our own CSFBL!
I god I think im losing my mind… best of luck getting it back soon brian!
January 24, 2007 at 9:28 am
My thoughts….take this downtime to work harder? OR, scramble to find some other way to fill in the lulls…..like this!
January 24, 2007 at 9:38 am
Anyone remember laughter?

January 24, 2007 at 9:39 am
This thread is getting very hostile. Any minute now, chris will show up and padlock it.
I want my $1650.00 back. The donation said ‘fully refundable’ so I’ll take you up on that. Thanks.
January 24, 2007 at 10:06 am
Ok Crocko, I thought it was boring. Just all in all a boring show. I wanted to change the channel and then realized that nothing else was really on.
January 24, 2007 at 10:11 am
“It’s not self-aggrandizing. It helped to give some perspective to how the problems experienced here at our little game are common all the way to the top of the business world. I sense some sort of insecurity in its criticism.”
You’re right, Lomb. I didn’t realize how much insecurity I was harboring. It’s probably because I wasn’t breast-fed. Any chance we can schedule a session? I hope you don’t charge much, because I’m dirt poor.
January 24, 2007 at 10:13 am
Let’s keep it a little orderly here. I am locking this thread, since there is a newer post (well, from 12am) out.
